Excerpt from Jackleg
Riley drove the ten-mile trip to the county hospital along a rain-soaked highway. He couldn’t imagine what had happened to Terry. Had he been in a serious auto accident? ... He arrived at the hospital and Roy was in the lobby waiting for him.
"What happened, Roy?"
"You’re not going to believe this. He’s been stabbed and is in critical condition."
"Stabbed? For God’s sake, who would want to stab Terry Williams? The man never did anything to hurt anyone."
"Maurine."
"Maurine? Why in the world would she stab Terry?"
"I’m not for sure. All the information I have is what she told me. ... When I got there she was standing in her doorway. I asked her what had happened. She told me some guy had followed her home when she left the bar, and when she got out of the car he told her that she had killed his wife."
"Killed his wife?"
"That’s what she said."
"Why would he say that?"
